Tonight's show #7 - 13th April 2009

Another Monday, another show complete.

Tonight we had a chat with JOY's Online Development Team Leader, Gabe Lopata, about the latest on the JOY website developments, including recent changes, and future plans for the site.

We also discussed the latest in the government's plans for a National Broadband Network.

For reference, we also mentioned that you can check if your Windows PC is infected by the Conficker worm, by going to this website: http://www.confickerworkinggroup.org/. The site has some useful information on what the worm is, and everything that is known about it to date.

You can download an MP3 of the show direct from this link, or you may like to subscribe to the podcast with iTunes. Or, copy and paste the following URL into your favourite podcast software:

It's easter, so here's an easter egg

Here's something I stumbled upon this morning. If you use the latest version of Firefox, go to the location bar, and enter "about:robots" without the quotes. Anyone who's a fan of The Day The Earth Stood Still, Isaac Asimov, Blade Runner, Futurama, or Battlestar Galactica is sure to appreciate what comes up. Also, feel free to press the "Try Again" button.

Some more easter eggs can be found here.

Next week's (Easter Monday) show line-up is looking good - although we're without Brendan (who's probably silently soaring high above Wellington as you read this) - we'll have a chat about Australia's new plans for the National Broadband Network, taking the bite out of Telstra's apparent anti-competitive behaviour. We'll also be interviewing someone from JOY's volunteer team - discussing what it takes to help out JOY in a I.T. capacity.

New look, and this week's show

You may have noticed this blog has a brand-new look. We hope you enjoy this design done by Madam Zach.

In tomorrow's show, we're discussing all things in online media. In what I like to term, a meta-discussion, we'll be talking through the ins and outs of new media, and the landscape that exists for us Australians.

We'll describe different ways of obtaining the news you're interested in, including the use of Google News, a couple of Aussie newspapers' online offering, and branching to the even newer onset of news delivery via podcasts and vodcasts.

We'll be taking a closer look at another Google product: Google Reader (for RSS feeds and processing). We'll also discuss the various media sources, their parent companies, and what side of politics they sway towards. And finally we'll give you some tips and advice on how to best utilise podcasts for shows you're interested in.
